Berry Earns Second Win of the Year After Taking Late Lead at Hickory

Josh Berry fought his way from the rear of the field Saturday night at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway and won the 100-lap Late Model feature with the No. 88 Speedco Chevrolet in a hard-fought, late-race duel.

It wasn’t as easy as it sounds, either.

Berry was forced to start shotgun on the field after a post-race qualifying issue. The roof on the No. 88 was too low, which Berry admitted was his team’s fault. Coming from 10th at the start, Berry carved his way to third in just 35 laps, which set the stage for the opportunity at victory.

The caution flag waved on lap 65, and on the ensuing restart, Berry got past Matt Piercy for second place. That set up the final 35-lap dash for the top spot, as Berry started to press leader Landon Huffman. Piercy took the group three-wide, with Berry in the middle side-by-side with Huffman. As Piercy made the move, Berry was forced to move up and Huffman spun to bring out another caution, this one on lap 93.

That gave Berry the lead, and he held it the final seven laps for the victory over Piercy, Shane Lee, Dexter Canipe Jr. and Huffman.

"Honestly, today was a tough one. Luckily, we were able to work through the field and caught a caution to get back in contention for the win. We were a bit off with the car in the race, so it was just tough to pass. The 75 car [Huffman] was strong on the outside, and we were all fighting for grip on the bottom towards the end. I hated to see the 75 spin, but it was just hard racing towards the end with all of us going for the win. I'm just excited to get Speedco back in a Victory Lane, and I'm looking forward to giving them a good showing Thursday night in the Denny Hamlin Showdown at South Boston."
