Berry, Byron Give JRM Saturday Sweep at Hickory

HICKORY, N.C. (Sept. 6, 2014) – JR Motorsports accomplished something Saturday night that it had not done in 13 years of late-model competition – score victories with two different drivers in one night. And by doing so, the company all but locked up a track championship, as Josh Berry and William Byron will enter the final race weekend with a stronghold on the top two spots in the Bojangles’ Late Model Point Standings.

The Saturday sweep came by way of twin 50-lap features at Hickory (N.C.) Speedway. Byron, a 16-year-old rookie from Charlotte, N.C., scored his first career victory in the opener, and Berry won his eighth of the season in the nightcap.

“Tonight was an awesome night for our team,” said Berry. “It was cool to finally see William get his first win, and for us to finish out the night with win No. 8 on the season was awesome. I feel like we made the right adjustments after the first race, and the car was spot on.”

Winning the pole for both races, Byron led wire-to-wire in the first 50-lapper to put his No. 9 Liberty University late model in victory lane for the first time. He fended off challenges from Dillon Bassett and Berry to score the win.

Byron started on the pole in the second race, but Berry squeezed by in his No. 88 Speedco late model on lap five to take the lead in which he would not relinquish.

Berry, a 23-year-old from Hendersonville, Tn., has raced for JRM since 2010, and he won the company its first track championship at Motor Mile (Radford, Va.) Speedway in 2012.

Berry will carry a 34-point lead over Byron into the final weekend and will need to finish 17th or better Saturday in his 100-lap race on Cargo Transporters Championship Night presented by NAPA to secure his second championship.
